Our Urban Farming Initiative is a multifaceted project in which we have transformed an abandoned, overgrown baseball field into a 1.5 acre working farm that produces fruit, vegetables, and herbs. We have also converted several nearby vacant lots into places for raised beds and blueberry bushes.
Young people in our BASIC (grades K-5) and REACH (grades 6-8) summer day camps use the nearby lots as their outdoor classroom, where they learn ecological concepts, principles of nutrition and healthy eating, and skills in environmental stewardship.
The 1.5 acre farm, known as Ballfield Farm, is run by volunteers who have stepped up to cooperatively maintain it and benefit from its production. Visit: http://www.ballfieldfarm.com to get involved or for more information.
